Gurpurab: Guru Nanak Jayanti

Gurpurab is celebration or commemoration based on the lives of one of the Sikh gurus. The birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of the Sikh religion, usually comes in the month of November, and this day is being celebrated as Gurpurab, and also known as Guru Nanak Jayanti. It’s more that a festive time for Sikh community across the globe to worship and celebrate Guru Nanak Jayanti and Gurpurab.

The Gurpurab is the special occasion, and celebration of the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak or Guru Nanak Jayanti lasts for three days. Akhand Path is performed in the Gurdwaras before two days before of Gurpurab or the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak. On another day before of the Gurpurab, a procession is organized, Gatka the martial art team show their swordsmanship and the procession and entire Sikh community participate singing hymns of Guru Nanak.

On the Gurpurab day, or the birth anniversary day, special programmes are being started from the wee hours. With the singing of Asa-di-var and hymns from Guru Granth Sahib. Sometimes it is followed by katha (discourse), religious and Sikh Historical lectures and recitation of poems in praise of the Guru. Kirtan-Darbars and Amrit Sanchar ceremonies are also held in the Gurdwara hall. After Ardas and distribution of Karah Parshad (sweet pudding) the Langar (food) is served to one and all and there is kirtan till late in the night, the distribution of langar continues to the end of the programme.

The birth anniversary of other Sikh Gurus are being organized and celebrated with gaiety in Punjab and across the globe by the Sikh community. Guru Gobind Singh Sahib, the tenth Nanak was born at Patna Sahib on 22nd December 1666, (Poh Sudi Saptmi). His birthday generally falls in December or January or sometimes twice within a year as it is calculated according to Hindu Bikrami Calendar based on moon-year. According to Nanakshahi calendar the birth-day of Guru Gobind Singh Sahib falls only once in a year i.e. on 5th January (every year).

'Boita Bandana Utsav' in Odisha (Orissa)

'Boita Bandana Utsav' in Odisha is celebrated on the auspicious day of Kartik Purnima or Karhik Purnima. People in Odisha (Orissa) celebrate 'Boita Bandana Utsav' to recall their maritime past. Boitas were ships that were built in ancient Odisha during the period of Kalinga empire.

Ancient Odia merchants, called Sadhabas (Sea Traders) used the boitas to travel to distant lands such as Bali, Java, Sumatra, and Borneo, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Vietnam, Persia, China, Africa and Greece for trade and cultural expansion. They used to start their journey on the auspicious day of Kartik Purnima (Karthik Full Moon Day).

People in Odisha celebrate that day by floating boitas made of Banana branches and other materials in the river, ponds and seas in the wee hours of Kartik Purnima and then take holy dip in the water. Orissa's Chilika Lake - Queen of natural beauty

Chilika is one of best bird sanctuaries of India. The spectacular view of the Chilika attracts birds and tourists across the blog. During the season, October to March every year milion migratory birds flock to Chilika, situated in Orissa, India. Of the nearly 60,000 birds, 20,000 were sighted in the lake's Nalabana island alone in Chilika this year. Chilika is the larges lake of India. Chilika Lake spreads across three districts Puri, Khurda and Ganjam. The atmosphere is just serene and undisturbed amidst the blue expanse of water on one side and an evergreen range of hills on the other. Watching birds and capturing the pictures of birds are the most common activities seen among tourists. In Chilika, you can see the migrated birds from across the globe. As winter goes up the number of birds will increase significantly. It was declared one of the six wetlands of international importance for Arctic and Central Asian waterfowl by the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. Every year about a million migratory birds from places like Siberia, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and the Himalayas come to the lake during winter.



The state government has taken several steps to protect the birds. More than 5,000 people, including villagers and wildlife officials, are engaged in ensuring that the birds move freely without any threat. The water spread of Chilika varies between 1,165 and 906 sq km during the monsoon and the summer respectively. A 32-km-long narrow channel connects the lagoon to the Bay of Bengal.



Places of tourist interest in Chilika : Kalijai Island, Honeymoon Island, Breakfast Island, Birds Island, Nalabana (Island of Reeds), Parikud Island, etc. are some of the important and interesting spots inside the lake.

Maruti Splash to hit Indian Market by 2009

The much awaited car Maruti Splash will hit Indian market by next year. The concept of the Maruti Splash was unveiled as a concept car in 2006 at Paris motor show. The Maruti Splash is the fourth new model for the Maruti Suzuki after the launch of Swift, Grand Vitara and SX4. It would be next small car segment in India by Maruti-Suzuki and one of the first of kinds in eco-friendly cars segment. Maruti Splash has a very refined and fuel efficient 1.2L petrol and the award-winning 1.3L multijet (DDiS) diesel engines are planned for the car. This car is expected to hit Indian roads early 2009.

All the engines of the Maruti splash are Euro4-compliant. Maruti Suzuki’s Splash is orientated strongly towards the European design style and the Suzuki designed the new small car that corresponds to the Splash name: youthful, fresh and stylish. Maruti Splash may price the car around its Wagon R, which comes with a tag of about Rs 3.50 lakh.

Mysore Palace – A spectacular Palace

The Palace of Mysore commonly know as Mysore palace as is situated in the city of Mysore, southern India. Mysore Palace was the official residence of the former royal family of Mysore. The Mysore Palace was used to for the ceremonial meeting hall of the royal court. The Mysore palace was commissioned in 1897, and its construction was completed in 1912. It is now one of the most famous tourist attractions in Mysore.

Mysore is known as City of Palaces. The Kingdom of Mysore was ruled by the Wodeyar dynasty from 1399 until the independence of India in 1947. It will be spectacular to catch the glimpses of the palaces during night and even more during the Dussehra festival. The experience of Dussehra festival in September - October at the Msyore Palace will be life time experience for the visitors.

Chhath Puja – A colorful festival of India

Chhath Puja is a very joyous and colorful festival. Chhath Puja is the holiest Hindu festival of people in northern India. Mostly the Chhath Puja is being observed in Bihar and Jharkhand and the festival comprises rituals for four days. The Chhath Puja begins a week after Diwali. The word Chat denotes the number six in Hindi. The Chhath Puja begins on the sixth day of the Kartik, a holy month as per Hindu calendar. Some people spell Chath Puja as Chat Puja, Chatt Puja, Chhath festival, etc.

Chhath Puja is dedicated to worship the Sun God. The Chhath Puja is known as ‘SuryaShashti’. People observe Chhath Puja to thank the Sun for bestowing the bounties of life on earth, as also for fulfilling particular wishes. People believe that by observing the Chhath Puja they can fulfill their desires. The Chhath Puja has been observed since long time in India. On Chhath Puja day, all the people dress up in their best and new clothes are a must. Folk songs are sung both at home and on the riverbank. Millions of people take dip in the holy water of river Ganges, and other rivers.
